The Charlotte Herb Guild
Meeting of June 12, 2018
Garden Council House

President Mary Beth Collins called the meeting to order at 7:30 pm. and thanked the hostesses Beth Burgin, Lynn Lytle, and Dixie Kelly for providing the delicious food with a clever camping theme. She thanked Holly Jefferies for organizing the Farmers’ Market, and Lana Andrews and Phyllis Cutrell for planning the enjoyable May trip to the Asheville Farmers’ Market.

Mary Beth said that volunteers catered a lunch for the Sardiswood Garden Club and the Herb Guild earned $180. She thanked Margie Orell, Suzanne Williams, Susan Poel, Ann Baldwin, and Susan Oleson for joining her in this effort.

Mary Beth asked for approval of the April minutes and they were unanimously approved.

Membership Chair Margie Orell introduced Mary Beth’s guests Pat Siegfried and Ranu Thakkar. The Herb Guild was happy to welcome new member, Debbie Bouton, and returning members Eric and Craig Ritchie.  Margie showed members the new CHG business cards and offered them to the members.

Lana Andrews, on behalf of Dixie Kelly, said that the Farmers’ Market earned about a $700 profit, and the CHG has a balance of $7197.

The Hezekiah Alexander Garden is doing well with many thanks to Eric and Craig for their help with the soil. Lana, Mary Ann, and Ann planted herbs recently. They are asking for volunteers to help with the upkeep of the garden.

At the Champions of History Day, volunteers Ann, Mary Beth, Margie, Susan Poel, and Brenda helped answer questions about the garden. Susan Poel suggested someone compose an “elevator speech” about Mary’s Garden, named for Mary Alexander. Ann will write up a short piece based on a 2008 article from Brenda. It was also suggested that photos from each of the gardens be posted on the website. Ann said that in the past, CHG sold note cards with garden photos; this might be an idea for the Farmers’ Market and for our members to purchase.
Beth Burgin asked for some ideas for the Garden Council Garden. Most of the herbs are doing well except for two plants. She collected garlic chive seeds for all members.

Mary Beth said the Charlotte Council of Garden Clubs has sent out a questionnaire via email.   A copy of the questionnaire is also attached to these minutes.  Feel free to express any concerns about the Council or the House and Grounds.  The large dead tree in the parking area will be taken down soon by Heartwood.

Lana reminded members that the July 10 program on Making Herbal Dips will be at Savory Spice and asked that members arrive on time. There will be very simple refreshments, such as herbal dips and spreads.

Lana introduced the vice president of the CHG, Susan Poel, who presented an educational talk on using culinary herbs.
Respectfully submitted,
Susan Oleson, Communications Chair
